In Panama, Maggie King meets soldier Skid Johnson on his last day in the army and reluctantly agrees to a date to celebrate. The two become involved in a nightclub brawl which causes Maggie to miss her ship back to the States. Now stranded, she's forced to move in with Skid and his pal Harry. She soon falls in love with Skid. Skid gets a job playing the trumpet at a local club and becomes a big success. Ronnie Singer (ca. 1927- ca. 1951) was a Chicagoan bebop guitarist. He moved to New York in the late forties / early fifties to play with great jazz players like saxophonists Charlie Parker, Lee Konitz, Zoot Sims, trumpeter Red Rodney, guitarist Jimmy Gourley, pianist Lou Levy, drummer Al Levitt, clarinetist and band leader Artie Shaw, etc. He eventually committed suicide with his wife by asphixia in a gas oven. Here are the sole known recordings of this incredible cat with an unidentified quintet - a great trumpeter (Don Joseph, Don Fagerquist?) and a steady piano-bass-drums rhythm section. Tunes are Vincent Youmans's Tea For Two, Miles Davis's Donna Lee and Ford Dabney's Shine. Tapes were belonging to the late great St. Louisan bebop guitarist Jimmy Gourley, contemporary and friend of Ronnie Singer, who considered him as his greatest influence, ahead Jimmy Raney and Charlie Christian.

Jefferson was an innovator in the field of vocalese, in which words or a story line are written to replace the notes of famous instrumental solos from previous recordings by major jazz performers, such as Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and others. Jefferson’s lyrics were his method of paying homage to the composition’s soloist. His style influenced King Pleasure, as well as Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, and more contemporary artists such as Al Jarreau, Leon Thomas, and the Manhattan Transfer. Although the “Main Man” was recognized primarily as a be-bop singer, his musical versatility is represented in recordings with James Moody and Richie Cole, and on sessions he led personally.
